A Houston man became a hero to his neighbor when he saved her dog’s life after she got on the elevator with one end of the leash…and the dog didn’t follow.

The rescuer named Johnny Mathis, first shared his story on Twitter where he detailed the event that truly left him shaking.

Y’all I’m shaking!!! I just saved a dog on a leash that didn’t make it onto the elevator with the owner before the door closed! I just happened to turn around as the door closed and it started to lift off the ground I got the leash off in time.”

According to KHOU Channel 11, Mathis says that the incident happened on Monday, December 9th, 2019 but he wasn’t able to get the security footage of the incident until Tuesday, December 10th, 2019.

Mathis was getting off the elevator at their apartment complex when his neighbor got on the elevator, her small pomeranian following along on a retractable leash.

As the dog stood next to her and the doors opened, she got on the elevator, but the pup didn’t follow. Without a second thought, Mathis jumped into action, doing everything in his power to break the leash and help free the dog. Luckily, he was successful.

He says that the woman, who immediately realized the problem, began screaming as the elevator doors closed on the leash.
