James Caan, one of Hollywood’s most iconic and beloved actors, died on Wednesday (July 6). He was 82 years old.
A statement on Caan’s official Twitter page read:
“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6. The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.”

Caan’s acting career started in the 1960s. One of his earliest roles was in the Western film El Dorado, in which he played Alan Bourdillion Traherne, who was called “Mississippi.”
The film also starred John Wayne and Robert Mitchum. After news broke about Caan’s passing, John Wayne’s official social media pages shared the following statement:
“We are saddened to hear about the passing of James Caan. John Wayne and James starred in El Dorado alongside Robert Mitchum in 1966. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.”

In 1970, Caan played Brian Piccolo in the 1971 film Brian’s Song. His performance earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie.
Just two years later, Caan appeared in the film he is perhaps most remembered for…The Godfather. Caan played Santino “Sonny” Corleone, the eldest son of Vito Corleone (played by Marlon Brando).
Caan’s performance in The Godfather led to two award nominations. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture.
Caan continued to build an extensive filmography. Some of his most notable works include The Gambler, Funny Lady, Thief, Misery, and Elf. His final film role was in the 2021 romantic comedy movie Queen Bees.
He is survived by his five children. One of his sons is the actor Scott Caan, who is known for playing Danny “Danno” Williams in Hawaii Five-0.
