Video Of Enormous Shark Sparks “Megalodon” Fears

Alex Albrecht / TikTok

A clip shared on TikTok that shows a gigantic shark swimming next to a yacht has some fanaticizing the return of the megalodon.

Musician Alex Albrecht captured the massive beast while at sea on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean. “Sailed six weeks in the atlantic saw this big f–king shark,” he captioned a TikTok video on Tuesday, May 25, 2021.

The shark appears menacing as it swims slowly in a circle near the surface of the ocean, prompting screaming tourists to clamor near the boat’s edge to get a glimpse. The whole video looks like a scene from a movie.

Of course, it’s not a megalodon, they went extinct, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that this is a BIG shark.

Most people who commented on the video agreed that the shark in the video is most likely a basking shark, which are passive creatures that pose very little danger to humans. However, there were a large number of people asking, “Is that megalodon?”

The megalodon, which went extinct millions of years ago, was the largest shark ever to prowl the oceans and one of the largest fish on record. The scientific name, Carcharocles megalodon, means “giant tooth,” and for good reason: Its massive teeth are almost three times larger than the teeth of a modern great white shark. The megalodon’s fossilized bones and teeth give scientists major clues about what the creature was like and when it died off.
