A Friendly Competition
Last night, on the 15th season of the show, they held the knockout performances. The Knockout Rounds consist of the coaches’ strongest singers. The singer will choose the song they wish to perform individually while their competitor watches. The importance of these performances is to win over their coach before the Live Performance shows, or “the Playoffs.”
Clarkson has a strong team this season with vocal ranges out of the ballpark. One of her younger singers is 17-year-old Abby Cates. During her knockout performance, Cates would be paired up against one of her best friends, Claire DeJean who sang Shawn Mendes’ “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back.” Unfortunately for the friends, only one performer could stay.

right before the knockout performance, knowing there were no more steals or saves left @clairedejean and I told each other saying that we were both going to kill it and no matter what happened we are each other’s biggest fans and that could not be more true <3 @clairedejean I love you so much and I’m so glad the universe brought us together. I really am your biggest fan (literally) (like legitimately other than ur mom it’s me) and I can’t wait till the rest of the world can see what you’ve got in ur beautiful mind. You are one of my very favorite people on the planet and I love you 5ever ❤️ everyone give claire some love thank u v much
When it was time for Cates to step up to the stage, she was more than ready. Performing one of Clarkson’s biggest hits, “Because Of You” set the tone for high expectations. The hard-hitting song helped Cates show off her insane vocals hitting every note. Although the coaches try to keep neutral reactions during the performances, it was obvious Clarkson and Hudson were hypnotized.
Cates really stole the show when she took Clarkson’s usual chorus and made it her own, taking her vocals as high as she could go. During the bridge, she continued to haunt the audience and coaches with her soft voice. At the end of the performance, Clarkson encouraged the young singer with a “Yes!”
We have high hopes for this young powerhouse!
