The competition is heating up! NBC’s The Voice judges have been working overtime with their contestants to make sure their voices are on point. Jennifer Hudson’s hard work proved to pay off the other night as one of her team members absolutely nailed Aerosmith‘s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.”

A Barrier-Crossing Jam

When Aerosmith released their hit song, “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” in 1998 – it was a rockin’ ballad. But, in 1999 the tune got a complete country makeover by Mark Chesnutt. He added a little twang and whole lot of soul to the song. Now, in 2018 – the song got another sort of remake by a Voice contestant.

A Child Star’s Second Chance

Hudson’s contestant, Patrique Fortson has an interesting story different than any other competitor’s. When he was only six, he was signed to a record label as a gospel singer. Unfortunately, the label went bankrupt and Fortson had to put his dreams on hold. He worked for years in the insurance industry but something was missing. That something was music.

So when he tried out on The Voice, it was a dream come true to get picked up by the coaches. For his blind audition, he chose the R&B  Oleta Adams hit, “Get Here.” While his first time singing for the coaches absolutely wowed them – his new performance of Aerosmith’s song shows just how far he has come vocally.

A Stiff Competition

Patrique Fortson has had to prove himself over and over again to the coaches as he has taken on battles and knockout rounds. The Voice released the matchups for the knockout rounds with a cute video of the competitors trying to guess Mariah Carey songs based on emojis.

During the last night’s show (Oct. 29, 2018) Fortson went up against the rockin’ Sandy Redd as she gave a sultry performance of Ariana Grande’s “Dangerous Woman.”

The Performance Of A Lifetime

Still, Fortson’s fiercely bluesy, jazzy, rock-centered ballad completely stole the show. The entire time he was performing, the crowd was on their feet dancing and singing along. And when he hit that high note at the end – even the judges were brought out of their chairs for a standing ovation. You can watch his full performance below but get ready – you’re sure to be blown right off your feet with this one.
