Kayce Dutton has become one of the most beloved characters on the hit Paramount Network show Yellowstone.

Before actor Luke Grimes played the complex youngest son of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton, he was a drummer in a country band in Los Angeles County.

“It was around that time when the alt-country thing was really going on. Wilco and Ryan Adams were really big then and we were kind of like that,” Grimes told Rolling Stone in an interview in January 2022. “I played guitar too and helped write songs for the band, so I got to be more than just the drummer. It was a cool experience.”

This year, Grimes is planning on hitting the ground running with a country music career as a solo artist. He has teamed up with Range Media Partners, the management team who represents country band Midland and his Yellowstone co-star Ryan Bingham. Coincidentally, Range Media Partners already represents him as his management team as an actor.

According to Rolling Stone, Grimes has been writing songs to prepare for his country music launch. And will do even more during a trip to Nashville. His style of country will be influenced by his surroundings. After booking Yellowstone, Grimes loved Montana so much, he and his wife moved there full time.

Of his style of music, he said, “This just happens to be what my life is right now. I’m driving a diesel truck on a highway with no one on it. That’s the feeling you get being here.”

While we will have to wait for his new music, there is a song of his that is already out called “Reckless Road.” He wrote it with his former bandmate Jesse Cole, who is now a singer in Nashville, for a Netflix TV pilot. Grimes said “someone ripped it off of Netflix and put it on YouTube.”

Nearly one year after his Rolling Stone interview, Grimes is ready to launch his singing career. On Wednesday (Dec 14), Universal Music Group Nashville announced that they had signed Grimes to a record deal.

We are stoked to welcome @lukegrimes to our Universal Music Group Nashville family! Grimes, widely known for his role as Kayce Dutton on the hit show @yellowstone, has made no secret of his love of music. We are so excited for all the things to come!” the announcement read.

Along with that announcement, Grimes himself teased his very first release, which is titled “No Horse To Ride” and it was released on Friday (Dec. 16).

He annoucned the single on his social media channels, saying, “My first song from my upcoming album releases today on all platforms. Music has always helped me find meaning. Hopefully this song means something to some folks out there, that would sure mean a lot to me. Much love, more soon…”

The single is a love song about how incomplete he would be without his love interest. In the chorus, he sings:

“I’d be a drunk without a drink to drink
A guitar with a broken string
Without you, I’d be a fallin’ star without a midnight sky
A cowboy with no horse to ride.”

Grimes’ voice has a grittiness to it that we’ve never heard before. His sound definitely is unique – and we love it. Take a listen below.
