Before Joanna met her husband, Chip, the interior designer starred in television commercials to promote her father’s business. Joanna was the face of her dad’s Firestone tire shop, and she also worked in the store. At that time, Joanna even considered taking over the business when her father retired.
In Joanna’s book, The Magnolia Story, the television star explained Chip recognized her from the commercials when he visited the store. The interior designer remarked that she was “embarrassed” by the recognition.
“I looked up at him, and before I could even answer he asked, ‘Wait, aren’t you the girl from the commercials?’ ‘Yeah, that’s me,’ I said, still embarrassed,” Joanna wrote. “I was, in fact, the girl from the commercials.”
In the book, Joanna also explained that her father “insisted” she star in the commercials due to her television news aspirations. The interior designer wrote:
“I had even done an internship with CBS In New York City, working under Dan Rather in the news division, and because of that my dad had insisted I go on camera for the local TV ads he ran for his shop.”
