A Rare Chance Few Voice Contestants Get
All throughout The Voice, the contestants fight for their spot on the show by performing covers of other artists’ songs. But the final four contestants get a special opportunity once they make their way to the finale.
After all that time, they finally get the chance to sing an original song.
Those who are singer-songwriters will often debut a song that they wrote themselves. Some pick songs written by other artists, which is what Team Adam‘s Jesse Larson did during Season 12.

Sticking To A “Staple” Songwriter
Although Larson is more of a soulful singer, he has leaned toward the country side of things before. For example, his cover of “Tennessee Whiskey” allowed him to win the Instant Save that sent him on to the finale.
So when it came time to pick his original song, he ended up making a nod to the same artist who has thrown “Tennessee Whiskey” back into the spotlight.
Before he shot to fame following his performance on the 2015 CMA Awards, Chris Stapleton was known to country artists as a go-to songwriter. He has served as the guiding force behind some of country’s biggest hits in recent years, including Luke Bryan‘s “Drink a Beer” and Josh Turner‘s “Your Man.”

So you can bet that Larson was beyond thrilled when he was able to perform a song that Stapleton co-wrote as his original song on The Voice finale. Called “Woman,” the song was co-written by Stapleton and Timothy “Tim” James (Toby Keith‘s “My List,” Trace Adkins “All I Ask For Anymore”).
Bringing The Song To Life
Larson spoke to Levine while recording the song in the studio, saying it was an “honor” to sing a song written by Stapleton. He said the song is meaningful to him because it makes him think of his wife, and the two of them were expecting their first child together at the time.

That sense of passion came through crystal clear when Larson performed “Woman” on the Voice.
The slow, sultry song gave Larson the perfect chance to showcase the best qualities of his voice. His naturally soulful sound paired well with Stapleton and James’ romantic lyrics, especially as he sang, “Woman, let me lay my love on you.”
