Jon Hamm Speaks Out About The Death Of His Character Monty
Jon Hamm, the actor known for his roles in Mad Men and Fargo, recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the fate of his character, Monty Miller, in the hit series Landman.
Christian Wallace and Taylor Sheridan created the show.
Sheridan is the showrunner and is well-known for his work on several TV series, including Yellowstone. Christian Wallace is also the creator of Boomtown, the podcast that inspired the initial concept for Landman.
Landman has taken the world by storm, quickly becoming one of the most-watched series on Paramount+ within its first few episodes. It has developed a loyal audience during its first season, which just wrapped up with the season finale, Episode 10, on Sunday, January 12th.
Although the show has not yet been officially renewed for a second season, fans hope the story will continue.
Jon Hamm’s Fate In Landman
In Season 1, the series concludes with Jon Hamm’s character, Monty Miller, facing the critical question of whether he will live or die. He had suffered multiple heart attacks and had undergone several surgeries. He finds himself with no other option but to get a heart transplant.
The final clip involving Monty shows him with his two daughters and his wife, Cami. The three girls cry over an unconscious Monty.
The final shot left the audience confused. Monty could have simply been waiting for surgery, prompting the tears over his uncertain fate. He also might have been dead. Fans were left unsure.

However, in a recent interview, Wallace, one of the show’s co-creators, confirmed that Monty died in the last season.
“It is safe to say that Monty has passed, but when you take one major player off the board, it opens up opportunities for other players — and I think that’s all I’m at liberty to say at this point.”
This confirmation allowed actor Jon Hamm to be honest about his thoughts about leaving the show after the first season.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he was asked how he felt about the one-season commitment of the show and if that was appealing. To which he responded:
“Part of it is that my other commitments don’t really allow me to be a series regular on another show. I’m very happy that they asked me to do this, but I’ll tell you exactly what it was — it was the ability to work with Taylor [Sheridan] and Billy Bob [Thornton]. Those are guys whose careers I’ve been really paying attention to. They’re just working at the top of their game. I knew the show was going to be good; I didn’t know it was really going to spark in the culture the way it has, and that part of it is even better.”
The reporter later asked if he had ever died on screen in a previous show. To which he said he couldn’t remember.
He did have a funny exchange with his sister where she said, “I can’t believe I had to watch you die on screen.”
Hamm responded, “Haven’t you seen that before?” to which she said, “No!”
Later in the interview, Hamm went on to thank Taylor Sheridan for the opportunity and gushed about his co-stars, saying that a project like this is a “once-in-a-lifetime kind of deal.”
Even though it might be the end of Monty Miller in Landman fans might get the opportunity to see him in a future Sheridan series.
