In July 2020, Kacey Musgraves shocked fans when she announced that she and her husband, Ruston Kelly, were getting a divorce.
Musgraves and Kelly tied the knot in a Tennessee wedding in Oct. 2017. Musgraves dropped her hit album Golden Hour the following March, and from the outside, the country singer appeared to be on cloud nine. In an interview with Elle, Musgraves admitted she was just as surprised when her personal life began to falter. The “High Horse” singer stated:
“If you would’ve told me the night of the Grammys, ‘Hey, in two years, you’re going to be divorced and have a whole’ nother album written,’ I would have been like, ‘F-ck off. No. No way.'”

Musgraves admitted that while she and her husband loved each other, they were unable to make their marriage work “because it’s just not written in the stars.” The country singer confessed:
“I felt, in many ways, on top of the world in my career, but in my personal life, I felt like I was dying inside. I was crumbling. I was sad. I felt lonely. I felt broken.”
Despite Musgrave’s confession of heartbreak, the singer managed to make light of the situation on Twitter. The singer shared a photo from her Elle shoot and wrote a cheeky comment for fans on the platform.
“Legs longer than my marriage,” Musgrave joked in the caption.
