Watch Kevin Costner’s Passion Project Today On Netflix

Kevin Costner’s original film Horizon: An American Saga: Chapter 1, which is set in 1859 in the San Pedro Valley, was released on Netflix.

According to IMDB, the film “Chronicles a multi-faceted, 15-year span of pre-and post-Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West.” The film follows the expansion of the West and the wars that raged between the Native Americans and the new settlers.

Fans are excited about the film being available on the streaming platform, saying:

Costner said it was his turn to tell a story. He chose to tell an epic about America’s foundation. Costner originally opened the film at the Cannes Film Festival and said to Deadline:

“I feel I’ve made a movie for the people, period. This isn’t a movie from me. I felt like it was my turn in my career to tell a story. This is the one I choose to tell. It’s just my turn.”

“Horizon: An American Saga” consists of four chapters. Costner completed the second chapter, which premiered on September 7, 2024, at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. He plans to release the epic film to the public in 2025.

Costner starred in the film series but also directed and financed the project mostly independently. When asked by Deadline about the financing, Costner opened up about the cost of the project, saying:

“I’m on schedule right now at $98 million, and when I do the fourth film, it will push me over $100 million.”

Horizon’s Conflict With Yellowstone

Horizon: An American Saga: Chapter 1 is the project that Costner did after his fallout with Yellowstone.

He addressed the Yellowstone controversy in an interview with Deadline, stating that his new film was not the reason he fell out with Yellowstone.

Costner kept Yellowstone first throughout the entire project. He claims that the makers of Yellowstone kept moving the timeline around because they did not have a completed script.

This made it hard for him to complete Horizon or plan his life. In his own words, he said, “Horizon was set in the middle, but Yellowstone was first position. I fit [Horizon] into the gaps. They just kept moving their gaps.”

Many fans felt disappointed with the ending of Yellowstone because it no longer featured their favorite actor, Kevin Costner, as John Dutton.

Although Horizon vastly differs from Yellowstone, It is still a classic Western. This means fans will get to see one of their favorite actors as a cowboy once again.
