The new Yellowstone prequel 1923 debuted on Sunday (December 18). The series picks up 40 years after the previous prequel, 1883. While James and Margaret Dutton from 1883 are no longer alive, their sons John and Spencer are. John has a son of his own, named Jack.

In 1923, the Yellowstone ranch is actually run by James’ brother, Jacob. Jacob is played by Harrison Ford, while Helen Mirren plays his wife, Cara.

Since Yellowstone is the biggest show on TV at the moment, there was no doubt that 1923 would perform well. Now, the ratings are in, proving just how successful the 1923 premiere was.

According to to Deadline, the first episode of 1923 drew in 7.4 million viewers. Those viewers watched on Paramount+ and linear telecasts, which included an airing on Paramount Network, plus two encores and a run on CMT.

Deadline reports that 1923 broke a ratings record for Paramount+, making it the streaming service’s most-watched premiere of all time in the United States. As Deadline states:

…it wasn’t even a close race, with 1923 surpassing the previous record by nearly 80%. It eclipsed the debuts of such previous Paramount+ breakouts as Halo and Sheridan’s 1883, Mayor of Kingstown and Tulsa King.”

“The Yellowstone universe continues to break records, with our latest chapter, 1923 scoring as the most watched premiere ever on Paramount+ and debuting as the #1 new cable premiere of the year on linear,” Chris McCarthy, the President/CEO of Paramount Media Networks & MTV Entertainment Studios said in a statement. ” [Show creator] Taylor Sheridan continues to tap a cultural nerve that has proven irresistible to viewers from across the country and around the world, with this newest installment showing no signs of slowing down – proving yet again the power of our franchise strategy to fuel the future of Paramount+.”
