Senator John McCain broke the heart of the nation when he announced his devastating brain cancer diagnosis Thursday (July 20). Heartbroken by the news, Tim McGraw took to social media to send prayers in the direction of the “real hero.”

The Arizona-based Republican senator initially began making headlines after he underwent surgery last Friday (July 14) to have a blood clot removed, the routine procedure taking a turn for the worse when tests showed McCain had a cancerous brain tumor.

After hearing the heartbreaking news, the country singer shared a vintage black-and-white photo of McCain from when he was serving in the U.S. Navy, captioning the photo, “a real good man and A REAL HERO…Prayers from the McGraw family.”

After the glioblastoma tumor – a very aggressive tumor typically found in the brain and spinal cord – was discovered, doctors at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona removed it immediately. Following the surgery, test results showed they had successfully removed all cancerous tissue.

The office of the 80-year-old senator released a statement stating while he is doing “amazingly well,” the date of his return to work is currently unknown. Additionally, McCain tweeted an update on his condition, stating, “I greatly appreciate the outpouring of support – unfortunately for my sparring partners in Congress, I’ll be back soon, so stand-by!”
