On May 24, just days after the Season 16 finale of The Voice, longtime coach Adam Levine announced some shocking news. After being on the show for all 16 of its seasons, Levine said he would not be returning to coach Season 17.

The news was initially announced by Voice host Carson Daly on the TODAY Show, and Levine later followed up with a statement of his own. On social media, Levine wrote at length as he thanked all who made the show possible, including his fellow coaches.

Those coaches were all shocked when they learned about Levine’s departure from the show. They were originally under the impression that he would be returning for Season 17, and that news was even announced to the public.

All of the coaches who worked with Levine on Season 16 took to Twitter to respond to the news. Their messages made it clear that they would miss him on set.

Reigning champion John Legend finally opened up further about Levine’s departure from the show during a newly published interview with Extra.

We’re going to miss him,” Legend said. “He has been part of the show since the very beginning. This was my first year, and he has been a friend of mine for a long time. I have known him since before ‘The Voice.’ We are going to miss him on the show. I think he was ready and thought it was the right time.”

Legend, who previously served as Levine’s Voice team advisor during Season 12, is also looking forward to working with the coach’s replacement. Gwen Stefani (who last coached during Season 12), will be taking Levine’s place on the show.

Gwen is going be great,” Legend said.

We have no doubt about that! But even though we’re happy to have Stefani back on the show, it will seem strange without Levine.

Look back on how well Levine and Legend worked together on The Voice by watching the below interview from when Legend was Team Adam’s advisor. We’re sure Legend and all of the other coaches will miss Levine dearly!
