After HGTV stars Chip and Joanna Gaines announced they were expecting their fifth child, fans anxiously waited to see if they would be having a boy or a girl. That announcement came two months later, and it was done in the perfect way.
Chip enlisted the help of a young boy named Gage to announce the gender of Baby Gaines. As a huge fan of the show, Gage knew exactly what Chip was implying when he asked him if he could help him come up with a “D” name for the baby.
In case you didn’t know, the Gaines’ two sons both have names that start with “D,” Drake and Duke. On the other hand, their daughters have names that start with “E,” Ella Rose and Emmie Kay.
So when Chip asked Gage if he could help him pick out a “D” name, he knew that meant that Chip and Joanna were expecting a boy!

However, the couple started hinting before the baby was born that they may break from their traditional naming pattern.
Back in April, Chip and Joanna appeared on TODAY to talk all things baby. At the time, they said they were struggling to pick out a name because they both wanted something different.
Chip was totally game for continuing their tradition, but Joanna wanted to go in another direction. During that interview, she even named the letter she wanted the baby’s name to start with.
“I want a C name, he wants a D name,” she said. “I say he got the boy, so I get to pick the name.”
In the end, Joanna won. Once the baby was born on June 23 she announced they had named him Crew.
“Our baby boy, Crew Gaines, is here and we couldn’t be more in love,” she wrote in a caption accompanying several photos of her baby boy.

But while everyone thinks that Joanna was the first one to announce Crew’s name, they’re wrong. As it turns out, Chip hinted at his new son’s name long before Joanna ever said a thing, and y’all completely missed it.
Hours before Joanna spoke about the new baby, Chip announced his arrival on Twitter with a short message that opened with “And then there were 5..”
While he doesn’t make Crew’s name obvious in his tweet, he snuck it in so that it flew under everyone’s noses. It was only after Joanna revealed Crew’s name that fans had that “aha” moment looking back at Chip’s tweet.
This is exactly what he said, “The Gaines crew is now 1 stronger!”
Sneaky indeed!
And then there were 5.. The Gaines crew is now 1 stronger! 10 beautiful toes and 10 beautiful fingers all accounted for, and big momma is doing great! #blessedBeyondBelief

While baby Crew may not share a “D” name with his brothers, he does share a “C” name with his fun and loving father. Who knows, maybe he’ll grow up to be his father’s mini-me.
