The Yellowstone Series Finale Aired On December 15, 2024
After years of playing Kayce Dutton on Yellowstone, Luke Grimes admits it was hard to see the show end. He wasn’t the only one who found it challenging to say “goodbye” to the series.
Yellowstone‘s fifth season started in November 2022. The series took a mid-season break in January 2023, with plans to return much earlier than it did.
Multiple factors delayed Yellowstone‘s return, including the 2023 SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strikes. Additionally, rumors circulated about behind-the-scenes drama with series lead Kevin Costner, who eventually confirmed he would not return to film the second half of Season 5.
Eventually, fans learned that once Yellowstone returned, the last episodes of Season 5 would be its last episodes, ever. The show finally resumed in November 2024, airing its series finale on December 15, 2024.
Since Yellowstone was one of the most popular shows on TV, millions of fans had a hard time coming to terms with its ending. As Grimes shared in a recent interview with PEOPLE, the cast also struggled with accepting the end of the series. He said, “nobody wanted it to be over.“
“I don’t think the fans wanted it to be over,” Grimes added. “A lot of us actors kind of didn’t want it to be over, and the studio and network certainly didn’t want it to be over.“
He got candid about his personal feelings surrounding the show’s end, saying:
“To try to put that show away, it was hard. It was really hard, and I know this is going to sound weird, but it was sort of emotional. It was like losing a family in a way.“
Luke Grimes Dishes Details About His New Yellowstone Spin-Off, Y: Marshals
While the main Yellowstone series has come to an end, fans will still get the chance to see Luke Grimes’ Kayce Dutton. A new spin-off series, tenatively titled Y: Marshals, is set to start airing on CBS in the Spring of 2026.
Although he’s excited to play Kayce again, Grimes says it has been a “really bizarre transition” to leave the world of Yellowstone behind in favor of a spin-off.
“It will be weird,” Grimes said of the new series. But that weirdness will be alleviated by the presence of some “familar faces“ participating in Y: Marshals.
“There’s going to be some familiar faces, but there’s going to be a lot of new faces too, so we’ll see how that all feels,” Grimes said.
Grimes’ Kayce Dutton isn’t the only Yellowstone character getting a spin-off. Another new series, set to debut in the fourth quarter of 2025, will follow Beth Dutton and her husband, Rip Wheeler.
A connected series, called The Madison, is also slated to premiere in the fall.
