Carrie Underwood Shared Her Initial Thoughts About Meeting Cody Johnson

Carrie Underwood and Cody Johnson have teamed up to bring you their single “I’m Gonna Love You.” The duo announced the single on September 17, with Johnson saying on his Instagram:

“‘I’m Gonna Love You.’ is coming out next Friday, 9/27. Thank you @carrieunderwood for joining me on this one and making it so special. Can’t wait for y’all to hear it.”

The song has been in the making for a long time, with an original cut produced in 2019. The song was not originally meant to be a duet, but when they began discussing adding a female harmony, Johnson shared with Universal Music Group Nashville:

“From the moment I heard this song, I heard Carrie’s voice on it. It was a non-negotiable for me; either we sing it together, or I wouldn’t sing it at all. It’s that special to me,”

Carrie Underwood’s First Meeting With Cody Johnson

On set for their new official music video, Underwood reminisced about her thoughts on her new duet partner. She described how they met at a busy award show, and she left hoping he would end up doing great things. We can’t help but agree. In her own words:

“So I think the first time we met was an award show, and there’s always so much going on at those things, and everybody’s just coming and going. But I remember leaving that night, just saying, ‘I really, I really like that guy, and I hope I watch him do great things.’”

Johnson responded to the compliment and shared his first memories with Underwood, which were of listening to her tracks. Johnson considers Underwood one of his heroes and shared that he used to wonder what it would be like to be a famous musician like her one day, and now he is! During his interview, he said:

“Well, I feel the same way. You know we’re around the same age, but I always grew up listening to your music going I wonder what it would be like to be in that position. And they say they don’t meet your heroes because you might get disappointed. And I was not disappointed. It’s really a breath of fresh air to meet someone that fame hasn’t affected and that is really staying grounded.”

He then shared that his kids are the biggest Underwood fans!

“And when I told my kids, my little girls, that I met Carrie Underwood, they forgot all about Cody Johnson.”
